Choosing a Telescope for a Child

Summary of Recommendations
Purchase from a telescope store instead of a local box store to get better quality.
Get a 6" (150mm) telescope to increase the number of available targets in a manageable size.
Get a reflector because it will likely be less expensive.
Get a dobsonian mount since it is simple, stable and less expensive.
Skip GOTO since a good one adds a lot of cost and complexity.
Get a good smartphone/tablet app to use at the telescope. This way you'll know what to look for.
Find a good location with low levels of light pollution. It will make all the difference.

Keep in mind that these are all general recommendations. Your child and your situation, or course, are unique. However you decide, we hope this guide has been helpful to you.
