Choosing a Telescope | | Recommendation 6: Telescopes to Consider So, we are recommending a 3" (80mm) to 6" (150mm) telescope on an alt-az or dobsonian mount without
GOTO. If size or value is more important to you, we recommend a reflector. If sharpness is more important (or
daytime use), then
consider a refractor. Here are some good choices to consider:
✭ Celestron StarSense Explorer DX
102AZ (4") Refractor. Features: sharp views of the moon, planets and
brighter DSOs. As a refractor it can also be used during the daytime. New feature: comes with a
smartphone bracket to greatly aid in finding targets by using your phone's camera and a special app.
✭ AWB 5" Tabletop Reflector. Features: nice views of moon, planets and more DSOs. Very small. This is
our #1 recommended telescope to people looking for a low price and good value. It is also available as a
Skywatcher branded telescope... see Heritage 130 Tabletop Dobsonian.
✭ Celestron StarSense Explorer
6" Tabletop Reflector. Features: great views of moon, planets and lots of DSOs. This is a favorite because
it
can go deep with its 6" mirror but is still fairly small. It also comes with a smartphone bracket to greatly aid in
finding targets by using your phone's camera and a special app.
✭ Skywatcher 6" Dobsonian
Reflector. Features: great views of moon, planets and lots of DSOs. The views will be similar to the
Celestron 6" Tabletop but it is bulkier.
Of course there are lots of other good options available but the ones above are a place to start.
