Sagittarius, the Archer ⬅︎

My oh my -- Sagittarius, the Archer, is a most remarkable constellation, one to keep any stargazer full of 'wows' evening after evening! What is it about this constellation that makes it so special? Sagittarius encloses the heart or center of our Milky Way Galaxy. It is a treasure trove of star-forming nebulas, star clouds, and clusters.

From Starry Hill, there is a real challenge to viewing Sagittarius because it is very low in our skies. You'll need an unobstructed view of the southern horizon and you'll need to time it right each evening when Sagittarius is at its highest point due south.

At those times we recommend you use a pair of binoculars to explore its depths. You'll never get far before bumping into some cool target or another. Another challenge is keeping it all straight because there really is that much to see.

Start by learning the famous asterism known as the teapot using the map above. Look first for Kaus Australis, the constellation's brightest star. Then find the other stars of the teapot. Out of the teapot's spout comes the 'steam' of the Milky Way that travels up into the summer sky. This is where you'll find the most treasures. How cool is that?
